How to Count Words, Characters, and Sentences in Text
Get an instant count of words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and estimated reading time for any text.
Tool Used
Word Counter
Open the Word Counter
Navigate to /tools/text/word-counter.
Paste or type your text
Paste the text you want to analyse into the input area. It can be a tweet draft, a blog post, an essay, an email, or any block of writing. The counter updates live as you type.
Read the basic counts
The panel shows the number of words, the number of characters with spaces, the number of characters without spaces, the number of sentences, and the number of paragraphs. These are the four numbers most editors, school assignments, and content platforms care about.
Check the reading time estimate
Below the counts, the tool shows the estimated reading time based on an average reading speed of about 200 to 250 words per minute. Use this to check whether your article fits the time slot for a newsletter or a blog format.
Use it for character limits
If you are writing for a platform with a character limit (such as a Twitter post at 280 characters, an Instagram caption at 2200 characters, or an SMS at 160 characters), use the character count to make sure you stay under the limit before posting.
All done!
You are ready to use Word Counter like a pro.
